Redefining Sustainable Solutions for a Greener Tomorrow

Our journey
Engineering Sustainability in Southern Illinois
Located in the rural Shawnee National Forest region of Southern Illinois, Compressed Energy Systems is a testament to a decade of dedication and perseverance. Our journey began with Chris Schimp, a mining engineer graduate from the University of Missouri School of Mines - Rolla, who had a vision of harnessing the potential of abandoned mine methane.

Innovating Sustainable Energy and Agriculture
In the early days, Chris built a facility where he ingeniously utilized methane to power Caterpillar engine-driven electrical generators, supplying electricity to the local grid. Not stopping there, he maximized efficiency by repurposing waste heat from the engine exhaust to fuel hydroponic greenhouses, establishing a thriving tomato cultivation business.
Turning Challenges into Clean Energy
Recognizing the strategic advantage of the Texas Eastern 24" diameter gas pipeline running beneath the property, Chris took decisive action. He installed a tap and embarked on constructing a methane gathering system, now boasting over 50 miles of HDPE pipeline, alongside a processing unit designed to purify the methane to pipeline specifications. With sales into the pipeline commencing, this pivotal moment redirected the trajectory of our business.
